JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba hosted his weekly news conference on Monday, January 31, 2022.

The mayor said he disagrees with the recent letter of non-compliance from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Leaders from the EPA and the city meet bi-weekly to discuss issues, including the recent fire at the facility.

Lumumba said an electrical panel was destroyed and the part has been ordered. City engineer Dr. Charles Williams said the part is expected to arrive on April 27.

“Every step of the way, we’ve been communicating where we are. We’ve been communicating what the challenges are with the vendor. It should be no surprise to anyone why we are where we are and why it’s taking so long,” said the mayor.

“We have followed the procedures. We have discussed the process and the vendor has discussed the process as relates to where we are and where we’re trying to go,” said Williams.

The mayor said despite the disagreement, the city and EPA are still working together to fix the problems in Jackson.
