JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A free gas giveaway for seniors and those with disabilities was held in Jackson on Wednesday, March 23. The event started at 11:00 a.m. at the Chuk Stop Food Mart located at 3165 Robinson Street.
The organizers of the event were Wanda Evers, Coffee & Conversations, and 90.1 WMPR.
Evers, the station manager of 90.1 WMPR and Coffee & Conversations, said her focus towards doing the event was because she knows that seniors and those with disabilities are on a fixed income.
“I’ve been doing this for a couple years now, so I decided to donate something bigger that’s why I decided to do the gas,” said Evers.
Evers, along with other sponsors, believes gas prices have been a major downfall in local communities with senior citizens needing assistance.
“People with money don’t understand. They have to look at the bigger picture. They have to look at others that may not have as much money,” said Evers. “Maybe the people of Mississippi that has money will do more with their money and just try to help out everybody that needs something.”
The event was initially supposed to giveaway $1,000 worth of gas, but organizers were able to distribute $1,841 worth of gas.
Many people we’re lined up on Robinson Street with smiling faces when they were able to leave with a tank full of gas.
“I’m blessed today to be here to get this gas, because I didn’t have no gas. I was on empty,” said Christine Minor, a Jackson neighbor.
“I thank God they are doing this for the community. I’m Happy,” said Angel Evans, another Jackson neighbor.
Organizers plan to hold another gas giveaway soon.
