Woman accused of shooting Jones County 4-year-old arrested

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Jones County deputies announced a suspect was arrested for allegedly shooting a four-year-old girl.

The shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Lone Oak Apartments on Hoy Road.

Investigators said the child was taken by private vehicle to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. She was later airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson.

The child underwent surgery at UMMC for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was reported to be in stable condition Wednesday morning.

According to investigators, the shooter is believed to be Loretta Denise Elkins, 37, of Laurel. She was arrested in Livingston, Alabama, during a manhunt.

Investigators believe Elkins fired a handgun during an altercation with others at the apartment complex, and she inadvertently struck the child.

Elkins is in custody in Livingston, Alabama, and will face a judge there either Wednesday or Thursday. She is expected waive extradition.

Deputies said Elkins will then be transported to the Jones County Adult Detention Facility. Her initial appearance in Jones County Justice Court is tentatively scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday. She will face an aggravated assault charge.
