OXFORD, Miss. (WJTV) – One University of Mississippi (UM) student is dead and another was injured after being hit by a car behind Oxford City Hall on Sunday, October 16.
Officials with the Oxford Police Department said people nearby called 911 to report that two people were injured behind Oxford City Hall around 1:14 a.m.
Officers arrived on scene to provide medical attention to the victims. They were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi.
One of the victims, a male student, died from his injuries. The other victim, a female student, was transferred to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis with critical injuries.
Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill identified the male student who died as Walker Fielder, of Madison. The female student’s identity was not released.
“We received the heartbreaking news that one of our students was killed early this morning, and another was seriously injured after they were hit by a vehicle driving near the Square. We have been in touch with the families to offer our condolences and our support. I ask the community to join us in mourning the tragic loss of a life taken too soon, and we hope and pray that our injured student recovers fully from her injuries,” said Brent Marsh, UM Dean of Students.
