JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Damage has been reported across the Jackson-metro area after a severe thunderstorm moved through Central Mississippi on Friday, June 16.
Officials with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said one death has been reported to the agency. A Canton man died when a tree fell on his home.
Statewide, counties have reported 69 homes have been damaged.
- Covington – 20 homes
- Claiborne – 3 homes
- Jones – 15 homes
- Simpson – 15 homes
- Hinds – 11 homes
- Madison – 1 fatality in Canton; Multiple homes with damage
- Warren – 2 homes; 1 church
- Yazoo – 3 homes
Some of the damage included a tree on a home on Daniel Circle in Jackson.
The National Weather Service said an EF-1 tornado touched down in southern Warren County. The strongest winds were around 110 mph. The path was about 8.5 miles long and a half mile at the widest.
In Vicksburg, shingles from the Econo Lodge landed on top of the Waffle House on Clay Street. The Waffle House will be closed on Friday due to a power outage. The manager of the restaurant said they do not believe there is damage inside.
A tree also fell on Redbone Road in Vicksburg. Families, who live in the area, said they were without power Friday morning. A tree also fell on Ring Road in Vicksburg.
In Jackson, city leaders said the 911 system was down due to an outage Friday morning. They announced just after 11:00 a.m. that the system was restored.
The storms caused trees to fall on Oakwood Drive and Woodstone Road in Clinton.
In Rankin County, there were trees and limbs down in the Crossgates neighborhood in Brandon. Flowood police encouraged drivers to be caution on Lakeland Drive Friday morning. Due to the storms, there were several traffic lights out.
Gov. Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) said 160,000 people across the state were without power.
“Crews are currently working hard to restore power as quickly as possible and damage assessments are underway. No injuries have been reported at this time. As always, the state of Mississippi is ready to assist local emergency managers as needed,” said Reeves.
Entergy Mississippi reported more than 61,000 outages Friday morning.
MEMA officials encourage residents who’ve sustained damage after a severe weather event to do the following:
- File an insurance claim.
- Take photos of the damage to the home.
- Report damage to county/MEMA via the self-report tool.
