JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A new system is in place at the Jackson Police Department (JPD) to help with the massive number of calls they receive via 911.
Interim Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said the call center sees an average of 1,700 calls each day.
It’s no secret that JPD has a workforce challenge, but Wade said they will change the narrative. Currently, the call center has 29 permanent and 14 temporary dispatchers. They’re always looking for recruits.
“We answered almost 600,000 calls for service last year. Almost 600,000. Those are calls that came into our center. Those are calls that required a law enforcement response. Some of the things that we’ve identified as issues, of course, as the mayor stated, is an internal care system. Our care system, a software system. Internally, we’re looking at that. We are constantly getting updates to that system to fit the needs of the Jackson Police Department,” stated Wade.
JPD will host a crime summit on Thursday, August 3 at Jackson State University (JSU), which will focus on collaboration and combatting crime in the city.
