PEARL, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said six winter weather-related deaths have been reported since January 14.

The most recent death was reported to MEMA in Washington County. The previous deaths were reported in Chickasaw, Humphreys, Rankin, and Sharkey counties.

More dangerous cold is expected to impact the entire state of Mississippi beginning Friday night into Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). This will cause hazardous driving conditions.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is advising drivers in North Mississippi to stay off the roadways from Grenada to the Tennessee state line.

Neighbors who need to warm up may seek shelter at a county or city-run warming center in your area. The full list of those shelters and safe rooms is online
