CARROLL COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The man accused of trying to attack a Carroll County mother and her children has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

On Thursday, January 25, 42-year-old Steve Goss, Jr., of Greenwood, was indicted on a charge of being a felon in possession of weapons. This incident stemmed from a November 2023 incident for which Goss was out on bond when the alleged attack occurred.

A Federal Detainer Hold has been placed on Goss as he remains jailed at Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility in Vaiden.

On Monday, January 22, deputies said they received a call about a knife-wielding man attempting to enter a home in the Gravel Hill area. The caller stated this his wife and three children were inside the home and were hiding in a closet. The caller also identified the suspect and gave a description of his vehicle.

As deputies responded to the scene, they spotted the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of Acy’s Store, but they said the suspect ran into the store. Authorities chased the man and arrested him inside the store.

The suspect was identified as Goss. Investigators said Goss had a single gunshot wound to his arm. He was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital where he was treated for his injures.

Goss was later booked into the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility on four counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary. Investigators said he was already out on felony bond for possession of a weapon by a felon at the time of this incident.

While deputies were dealing with Goss at the store, other deputies continued to make their way to the residence of the original call. Upon arriving, they discovered that Goss had driven his 2500 GMC Pickup Truck into the dining room of the home after he had been unable to get in through the front door.

Investigators said Goss discovered the mother and children hiding in the closet that was designated as the family’s safe room. Deputies said she shot him as he entered the closet holding the knife. He then fled the scene before he was captured at Acy’s Store.

Goss made his initial appearance in court on Tuesday, January 23. His previous bond for felon in possession of a weapon was revoked. Bond was denied on four counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary.
