JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Some South Jackson residents are concerned following reports of numerous utility vehicles in their area.
On Friday, February 2, Central District Public Service Commissioner De’Keither Stamps reminded citizens and businesses to call their utility if they smell natural gas.
Several crews worked along Raymond Road on Friday. Atmos crews responded to a reported gas leak on Maria Drive. Gas leaks can pose serious risks, including fire hazards, explosions, and health issues.
If you notice the distinct smell of natural gas, which is often described as a rotten egg odor, you’re asked to take the following steps:
- Leave the area immediately: If you are inside your home or any building and detect a gas odor, evacuate the premises right away. Do not delay or investigate the source of the smell.
- Avoid potential ignition sources: As you leave the area, ensure that you do not use any electrical switches, lighters, or any other devices that could create sparks.
- Call emergency services: Once you are at a safe distance from the suspected gas leak, call your local emergency services or the gas company’s emergency hotline. Provide them with your location and a detailed description of the situation.
- Do not attempt to fix the problem yourself: Gas leaks require professional attention. Do not try to locate or repair the leak yourself, as this can be extremely dangerous. Leave it to the experts.
- Warn others: If you are in a position to do so safely, inform your neighbors or anyone nearby about the gas odor and advise them to evacuate as well.
Stamps asked neighbors to remain patient because the construction may cause some traffic delays. He said he’s excited about the partnership with Atmos and hopes to bring reliable services to South Jackson.
“This represents one of the largest reinvestments of infrastructure in Mississippi history. We’re going to work with our partners at Atmos to ensure that Jackson and all of Mississippi have safe, reliable gas service,” said Stamps.
