CLINTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Leaders with the City of Clinton held a news conference on Thursday after Detective Anthony Fox was released from prison.
Fox, a former Jackson police officer, was released from the Madison County Detention Center on Wednesday. This comes after the Mississippi Court of Appeals reversed his conviction in the George Robinson case.
Clinton Mayor Phil Fisher took jabs at Hinds County’s judicial system during the news conference. He said watching the case unfold made him wonder if anyone could receive justice from a Hinds County judge.
“This has been a long-term problem and trying to create, you know, this revolving door that’s been going on at the courthouse because of the judges. It puzzles me about this. It really does. And you wonder why things are so, you know, wild out there in certain parts of this county. If people don’t fear prosecution, then they’re just going to run crazy,” said Fisher.
Fox was initially convicted in the 2019 death of Robinson. Fox was sentenced to five years in prison in August 2022 after a jury found him guilty of culpable negligence manslaughter.
The Court of Appeals reviewed the case and found that the evidence was insufficient to support the verdict.
After the incident in 2019, Fox was later hired by the Clinton Police Department.
On Tuesday, February 6, the City of Clinton’s Board of Aldermen approved Police Chief Ford Hayman’s request to re-hire Fox. Fox will return to work as a K9 narcotics detective.
WJTV 12 News reached out to Hinds County officials, but we have not heard back.
