JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews are working on a milling and paving project to improve infrastructure in the capital city.
Officials said phase one of the project is a temporary fix. The project started in late 2023, and MDOT officials expect the project to be finished sometime this summer.
Crews are milling up Interstate 20 and Interstate 55 throughout Hinds County. Once that’s complete, they will put down a one-inch asphalt overlay, which was approved this week.
“It’s just sustained use and beat down over decades of traffic and trucks, not to mention weather that we have here: ice, flooding, that kind of thing. So over time, it’s just… it’s taking a toll on the roads, and it’s formed cracks, it’s formed potholes, and we’ve got to go in. We’ve got to mill it up. It’s… it’s just gotten to the point where it’s… it’s work that’s got to be done,” said Michael Flood, public information officer for MDOT.
Officials with the department said they’re hopeful the temporary fix will hold until it’s time to permanently fix the asphalt on the interstates. They said that repair will come at a later date.
The total amount for the temporary fix is $11 million.
