JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police said a patient at Merit Health Central attacked and killed another patient at the hospital.

The incident happened on Tuesday, March 5 just before 10:00 p.m. Detective Tommie Brown said officers responded to the hospital after receiving a call about an assault.

Officers were told that a male patient attacked a female patient on the sixth floor of the hospital where they were both being treated. According to hospital officials, the male patient was experiencing a psychiatric episode at the time of the incident.

Brown said the victim was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) where she was pronounced deceased. The Hinds County coroner identified the victim as 51-year-old Wendy Gilbreath.

According to investigators, the suspect was arrested and will be charged with murder. Officials said the suspect and victim did not know one another prior to the incident.
