JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – New polling of likely Republican primary voters in Mississippi suggests that many of them support Medicaid expansion.
According to an American Cancer Society and Cygnal poll, more than half of Mississippi Republican voters polled support Medicaid expansion for those earning up to 138% of the federal poverty limit.
The polling showed 55% of voters support Medicaid expansion, 33% of respondents oppose expansion and 12% remain undecided.
WJTV 12 News spoke with Brent Buchanan, president and founder of Cygnal, about who they polled and what the data suggests.
“We interviewed 600 Mississippi Republican primary voters. And in that, we looked at somebody’s past voter history, but then also screen them through some initial questions to make sure that we’re actually talking to likely Republican primary election voters. At this point, you know, what Republican primary voters care about is what’s affordable, what’s accessible when it comes to health care and will I even coverage when I go,” Buchanan said.
The data also indicated that nearly 60% of Republican primary voters think healthcare is unaffordable in Mississippi.
