Watson: Mississippi sees low voter turnout for 2024 primary

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Secretary of State Michael Watson (R-Miss.) said Mississippi has seen a low voter turnout for the 2024 Presidential Primary.

Watson and his team traveled across the state on Tuesday to ensure election laws are being followed. After last year’s ballot shortage in Hinds County, he said the County Election Commission could use additional training.

“The important piece is understanding that Mississippi is a bottom-up state. So, our circuit clerk and elections commission is doing really hard work making sure we have communication open lines with them,” said Watson.

He said AI technology and deep fakes are also concerns to be on the lookout for.

“I’m looking for better. For them to do better by seniors. They look over the seniors. Got a piece of legislation right now dealing with deep fakes in the election space so if that gets passed it will be in place before November. That’s an important piece that I think Mississippians, not just us, but across the country, be aware of,” Watson said.
