JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba announced the recommended request for proposal (RFP) bid for the city’s garbage contract.

The evaluation committee recommended Richard’s Disposal.

“In the interest of full transparency, we are releasing to the media the recommended bid for the city’s latest garbage collection RFP process. We understand this is unusual outside of the public records process, but we feel it is necessary due to the widespread interest and importance of this contract to our residents. This follows the release of this information earlier today to all council members,” the mayor’s office stated.

According to officials, there were two bidders for the garbage contract: National Collection Systems, LLC, and Richard’s Disposal, Inc.

The contract would be for a term of six years. Officials said compensation under the contract is $891,000 per month, which includes the cost of purchasing and delivery of up to 45,000 carts to residents.

“We look forward to finally moving forward with a reliable garbage contract for the City of Jackson that our residents deserve,” the mayor’s office stated.

The proposed contract will still need to be approved by the Jackson City Council. The city’s current emergency contract with Richard’s Disposal is set to expire at the end of March 2024.

City Council President Aaron Banks, Ward 6, announced he will hold a town hall on the contract. The event will take place on Thursday, March 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Glory Empowerment Center in Jackson.
