Funerals set for Mississippi National Guardsmen killed in helicopter crash

FULTON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi National Guard (MSNG) will hold public funerals for two fallen Army aviators.

The service for Chief Warrant Officer 4 Derek Joshua Abbott will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024, starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Itawamba Community College Davis Event Center in Fulton, Mississippi.

The public is asked to line MS-178 between the Davis Event Center and the Itawamba Memorial Gardens to render honors as Abbott’s procession passes by.

The service for Chief Warrant Officer 4 Bryan Andrew Zemek will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024, starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Itawamba Community College Davis Event Center.

There will be a burial procession for Zemek on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 a.m. The procession will leave Senter Funeral Home in Fulton, Mississippi, and arrive at the 172d Airlift Wing, 141 Military Dr., Flowood, where the MSNG Honors Team will complete planeside honors in preparation for a memorial transport to his final destination for burial.

Zemek will be transferred to his final resting place courtesy of the 172nd Airlift Wing on a C-17 Globemaster 3 aircraft to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. He will be laid to rest at the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.

Abbott and Zemek died after a helicopter crashed on February 23, 2024, in a wooded area near Booneville. The AH-64 Apache helicopter was conducting a training flight when the incident occurred, according to the MSNG State Army Aviation Office.

Abbott is survived by his wife of 18 years and their three children. Zemek is survived by his wife of three years and their four children.
