RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies arrested a 14-year-old for allegedly killing her mother and injuring her step-father during a shooting.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the sheriff’s office received a call about the shooting just after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. The shooting happened in the 200 block of Ashton Way.
When deputies arrived at the location, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The man told deputies that he arrived home and found his wife, who was identified as 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. He claimed his 14-year-old step-daughter was armed with a pistol.
The teenager was identified as Carly Madison Gregg.

According to Bailey, the victim stated Gregg shot him in the shoulder. The man was able to take the weapon from the teenager, who then ran into the backyard and jumped over a fence.
Bailey said additional deputies responded to the scene, along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s (MHP) helicopter. Just after 5:30 p.m., Gregg was located not far from the residence and taken into custody without incident.
The sheriff said Gregg was placed under arrest for murder and attempted murder. Bailey announced on Wednesday that the teen has been certified as an adult and has been transferred to the Rankin County Adult Detention Center. Gregg appeared in court on Wednesday, March 20. She pled not guilty, and her bond was set at $1 million.

Officials with the Rankin County School District said Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School. They said Gregg was a student at the high school.
The City of Flowood released a statement about Smylie’s death on social media saying, “Our deepest prayers and condolences are with our Northwest Rankin family during this difficult time. We love our Cougar family. You are not alone.”
