ROLLING FORK, Miss. (WJTV) – Parents in the South Delta School District are frustrated after the former superintendent was demoted to maintenance supervisor.

Erra Kelly held the position of superintendent for 19 months after working her way through the ranks as a substitute teacher. During her time as superintendent, Kelly said she never received a write up or had any concerns brought to her by the school board.

“I feel it was personal, have to do with some personal issues, with some board members. It, it must be personal, because I haven’t done anything wrong and given the fact that I did everything for the whole 19 months, no write ups, anything, and there had been no concerns. No one called me and said anything to me. But you gave me a letter of non-renewal. And prior to the non-renewal, you didn’t let me finish the year out. But you gave me a letter of demotion. You took me from the top all the way to the bottom,” she said.

Verdia Smith, a parent, said the current school board members are not making the right decisions when it comes to children’s education.

“My problem is I think she was the best person for the for the job because she had high expectations for the district. And you could go to her if you had a problem, and she was going to address that problem. I just don’t think they respect the lady. I that’s the way I feel about it,” said Smith.

Carl Ford, another parent, said it’s time to clean house of the current school board members and put people in place who really care.

“You need young people in here, people that love the children that want to see our schools this move forward in one,” he said.

Kelly is still employed by the district as the maintenance supervisor. WJTV 12 News reached out to School Board President John Evans, who declined to comment on the matter. He said any questions can be asked at the next board meeting on Tuesday, March 26.
