JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – We are approaching the last full month of the 2024 Legislative Session, and Mississippi lawmakers have been busy since the first day.

Movement on Medicaid expansion has been the focal point of this session, so far. Mississippi Senate leaders are expected to discuss their plan in committee as early as the middle of next week.

Aside from Medicaid expansion, the Mississippi House has been the main chamber of action this session. In February, the House passed a bill that would legalize mobile sports betting in the state. The bill is alive and well and has been referred to the Senate Gaming Committee.

The House has also discussed police reform in two bills. The Trust in Law Enforcement Act and House Bill 691 set up extra accountability measures for Mississippi’s law enforcement.

The Trust in Law Enforcement Act died in committee, but House Bill 691, which allows for the Board of Law Enforcement Officer Standings and Training to investigate instances of misconduct and revoke officer certificates, is still alive. The bill has been transferred and referred to the Senate Judiciary B Committee.

In education, the House passed their public school funding formula. The MAEP alternative, the INSPIRE Act, transferred to the Senate and referred to the Education Committee.

On Thursday, the House attached a strike-all amendment to the Senate funding plan with the intent to implement the INSPIRE Act in the Senate bill.
