One killed in Rankin County officer-involved shooting

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Rankin County.

Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the shooting happened on Walker Drive in Florence around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 31.

Martin said deputies with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service regarding a person threatening family members at a home.

When a deputy arrived at the location, officials said the deputies were shot at by the unidentified suspect. They said the deputies returned fire, and the suspect was shot. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased.

According to Martin, the deputies involved did not receive any serious physical injuries.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) responded to the scene. They will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
