JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – An effort to implement no-excuse early voting in Mississippi has died in the State Legislature.

A House committee opted not to bring the bill up before Tuesday’s deadline.

The bill would have implemented early voting up to 15 days before election day. Mississippi is one of three states that offer no form of no-excuse early voting.

One member of the House Election Committee said concerns from local circuit clerks killed the measure this year, but lawmakers are optimistic to try again next year.

Lawmakers are set to hold meetings this summer with local officials and work to get the bill passed during the next Legislative Session.
