JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police said five people, including the suspect, were injured during a shooting at a birthday party.

The shooting happened around 8:00 p.m. at Mary C. Jones Park on Sunday, March 31.

When officers arrived at the location, Detective Tommie Brown said they found four gunshot victims. The victims were two adults and two juveniles. The victims were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for treatment. They are between the ages of 8 and 43.

Brown said it was later discovered that a fifth victim was also injured during the shooting.

According to witnesses, the shooting occurred during a birthday party at the park. Brown said the suspect, 19-year-old Zykia Winford, got into a fight with one of the victims. She allegedly pulled a handgun from her purse and began firing. Brown said Winford was injured during the shooting.

“What was very concerning to me is that someone would bring that type of violence to the situation where people were trying to just simply enjoy themselves over the holiday weekend,” said Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade.

Winford is being charged with four counts of aggravated assault.
