JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials warned travelers at the Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport to follow proper safety procedures with weapons.

TSA officials said one of their biggest issues at airports is travelers bringing unsecured or improperly-checked guns. Confiscations have gone up each year. Violators face substantial fines, property loss, missed flights and arrest.

Guns are not the only issue. According to the TSA, some fliers are bringing knives, tasers, brass knuckles, large rocks and other potential weapons. They’re collected by the thousands each year as fliers are screened by the TSA.

“Fifty firearm events that have occurred, 39 of those events occurred here in Jackson. And so, we wanted to highlight that information out to the public to make sure you know where your gun is at all times, to make sure that you are responsible for it as a gun owner,” said Kim Jackson, TSA Security Director for Mississippi.

Travelers can visit TSA.gov if they need more information about weapons restrictions at the airport.
