JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Many are seeking answers after three different reports were released supposedly containing JXN Water’s sanitation revenue.

The report shows three different sets of numbers for the dollar amounts collected in sanitation revenue for October through December 2023.

Fidelis Malembeka, Jackson’s chief financial officer, said he met with JXN Water in January 2024 to discuss the remittance of sanitation revenue that Jackson water collects. He said JXN Water was asked to provide data to support what was billed and collected.

“Our review of that information, we saw that the collection percentage from what was billed for sanitation only represented approximately 50 to 53%. And so, as you recall, that was the time we were preparing to enter into negotiations for a long term garbage contract. The question was posed as to what impact we would see to residents sanitation rates based on the new contractual our,” said Malembeka.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba recently raised concerns that residents could see a rise in garbage bills due to JXN Water’s sanitation collection rate being too low. JXN Water fired back at those claims in a press release stating its collections exceeded costs for the city’s new six year garbage contract.

JXN Water told WJTV 12 News that they had no further comments at this time.
