Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers said officers were responding to a call about a domestic dispute.

According to the police chief, officers attempted to make contact with those involved in the dispute when shots were fired at them. He said officers returned fire, and a stand-off ensued with the occupants barricaded inside an apartment.

Myers said Keithannia Starks, 28, of Canton, surrendered and was arrested after the stand-off. He said Starks was bleeding from the chest upon surrender, and he was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson for treatment. Starks is in stable condition at the hospital. He faces charges for domestic violence-aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer.

No officers were injured during the incident. Myers said the female involved in the incident is safe.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting. They will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
