JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The attorney for the woman convicted of causing a Hinds County crash that killed a mother and her six-month-old son has asked a court to disregard the jury’s verdict.
Attorney Kevin Camp filed a motion on May 6 in Hinds County Circuit Court asking for a judgment notwithstanding the verdict (J.N.O.V.) in Beth Ann White’s favor or for a new trial.
Last week, a jury found the 52-year-old White guilty on four counts of aggravated DUI and guilty of fourth DUI offense, which is a felony in Mississippi.
White was convicted of causing the crash that killed Allison Conaway and her six-month-old son, Alex. Conaway’s two other children, Chelsea and Chloe, sustained life-threatening brain and spinal injuries due to the crash. The girls survived their injuries.
Camp argued that the verdict is contrary to the evidence and without the necessary evidence to support it. He also said the verdict is evidence of bias and prejudice against his client.
Camp also argued that the verdict is an impossibility because the state’s expert found that he could not determine what White’s blood alcohol content was at the time of the crash.
Pursuant to Mississippi law, White faces up to 25 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) on each count. Her sentencing has been set for May 15 at 1:00 p.m.
