Jackson residents encouraged to prepare for Thursday’s storms

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – With severe weather expected to make its way to the Jackson metro area on Thursday, May 8, it’s best to be weather aware.

Preparation is key. With strong winds and hail expected, Jackson leaders said citizens should be equipped.

Areas in North Jackson saw damage following last month’s storms. Some homeowners are still recovering after trees fell on their homes.

The Jackson City Council introduced a new proposal in April that created a Severe Limb and Tree Risk Ordinance. Overhanging limbs, branches, and trees that could cause a danger to roads and powerlines should be reported.

City leaders said Public Works and Solid Waste will keep a close eye on the storms.

Councilman Ashby Foote, Ward 1, encouraged neighbors to reach out to their councilperson if they notice limbs or trees that may cause danger.

“Over 100 trees got knocked down in this in this part of Northeast Jackson and did lots of damage, and it’s taken a long time to really get back to where we were. I think another takeaway from this recent storm would be to make sure you’ve got good insurance, so that if you do have the damage like this home had right here, you’ve got an insurance carrier that can pay you to repair it and replace the stuff that you lose during the course of the storm,” said Foote.
