JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A revamped paid parking program was introduced to the City of Jackson at the beginning of May 2024. Nineteen days later, some said they’re still having a hard time adjusting to the new system.
Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said adding a more up-to-date way of paying for parking will increase Jackson’s revenue needed to make other improvements in the capital city.
“And if we want to be a more publicly facing a more responsible and responsive city, then we have to be more business oriented. And parking has been free in Jackson for all intents and purposes, over the last 20 years. It is no longer free,” said Lumumba.
The new parking kiosks, a product of SP Plus, are part of the city’s updated parking program.
“Hours of operation, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The rate is $1 an hour across the whole city right now with a two-hour max. The two-hour max is intended to meet churn on the street and ensure that there’s always a space available if you need to park,” said Casey Robinson, the reginal manager for SP Plus.
For long term parking, Robinson encouraged residents to park in parking garages or other off-street parking facilities.
Drivers can find further instructions on how to use the kiosks on the front and side of the machines. They can also use the text to pay option.
