JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police said a homeowner was injured in a shooting after confronting the suspects who were trying to steal a vehicle.
The shooting happened around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at a home in the 500 block of Bonita Drive.
Detective Tommie Brown said several unidentified juveniles were attempting to steal the vehicle. When the homeowner confronted the suspects, Brown said one of them shot her in the stomach.
The 64-year-old woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, told WJTV 12 News that she woke up to the sound of her security cameras. She saw the suspects driving up and down her block several times.
The woman said they eventually stopped on her property and attempted to get into her truck. She said someone else inside her home fired a warning shot, and the suspects returned fire, injuring the woman. They also fired shots at her truck.
The homeowner is vowing to stay put.
“I won’t leave my home. Been in Jackson for 29 years, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. Not for this. Not for this. I refuse to live in fear and let them run me away,” she said.
The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, and she’s now recovering at home. The woman said she’s grateful to be alive and for those who helped her. No one else was injured during the shooting.
Brown said officers are working to identify and locate the suspects. Anyone with additional information can contact the Jackson Police Department (JPD) at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
