JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) remains tight-lipped about what or who is at the center of an investigation after raids in Jackson on Wednesday, May 22.

The Downtown Cigar Company was just one of the few locations where federal agents were seen conducting searches and seizing items. The business is owned by Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens.

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, has remained outspoken about issues in the city, including concerns of funds being misspent.

“Everybody has a responsibility. There’s checks and balances,” said Stokes.

The councilman said allegations of corruption must be addressed at every level.

“I never forget at the council meeting, they say, ‘Mr. Stokes, the mayor said he’d take a drug test if you take one.’ And I said, ‘Let’s go. The evidence is at Channel 12 today.’ I took the drug test right then and there and passed. And that if y’all want me to take one right now, let’s take it,” said Stokes.

Federal agents were spotted at several locations across the capital city on Wednesday, including Owens’ office.

“We’re standing behind our district attorney. We feel like he’s been doing a good job, and we want to make sure that whatever the allegations are, I’m pretty sure that he’s ready to represent himself, as well as the county,” said Supervisor Robert Graham, District 1.

There were reports that federal agents made a visit to Jackson City Hall. WJTV 12 News reached out to the City of Jackson, and we were told there was no raid, and they were unaware of any FBI visit to City Hall.

“I don’t know where all the FBI is looking, but they’re doing their job. We all have a job to do and let’s make sure everyone does their job,” said Stokes.

The FBI said there was no threat to public safety during the raids.
