JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the raids carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at the Hinds County District Attorney’s office and business in Jackson.

On Tuesday, Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba stayed silent when it came to discussing the raids. The only thing he shared was that he was not raided by the FBI when agents were in Jackson.

Agents searched and seized evidence in the office and business of Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens on Wednesday, May 22. The FBI has not shared any details about the scope of the investigation or who they’re investigating.

WJTV 12 News asked Lumumba about his knowledge of the situation and if he knew why agents showed up at Jackson City Hall last week. The mayor said he had no comment.

We asked the mayor if he had a message to Jackson residents about the raids.

“My message to Jackson residents is to stay tuned. You know, with the business of the city and their personal lives, I don’t have any information to give them in order to direct them what to think or have any message. I have no information whatsoever on the district attorney or anybody else,” Lumumba stated.

“I think it’s a primary duty of all the leadership of Jackson, the elected leadership, whether his counsel or mayor, is to do everything we can to restore confidence in the citizens that Jackson’s government is functioning, functioning properly, and will be good stewards of the people’s resources and be look out for their interests, whether it’s public safety or economic or whatever,” said Jackson City Councilman Ashby Foote, Ward 1.

The district attorney’s office has also remained tight-lipped about the raids. However, they said they’re fully cooperating with the FBI.
