JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police announced one of the suspects seen in a surveillance video carjacking a family has been taken into custody.

Detective Tommie Brown said the 14-year-old was brought to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Office by his parents on Wednesday, May 29 after they saw the media cover the story. Officers picked up the teenager around 11:00 p.m. and transported him back to the Jackson Police Department (JPD).

The 14-year-old, who was identified as Jamontae Latrell Kelly, was charged with armed carjacking and six counts of aggravated assault. On Thursday, Kelly’s bond was set at $1.75 million.

Brown said the armed carjacking happened just before 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24 in the 3700 block of Jayne Avenue.

Heather Allen, one of the carjacking victims, told WJTV 12 news that the family was headed to North Mississippi to visit family on Friday when the carjacking happened outside their home. She said two suspects approached their vehicle and pointed a gun in their direction.

“They kind of do a U-turn, come walking up. You know, they say something, and I can’t recall what they say, but they start shooting at me. And my son is on the outside of the car, and they’re like, ‘Give, give me the keys. Give me the keys.’ And they yanked and pulled my daughter out of the car. And I stood up, and I saw them,” said Allen.

She said her vehicle was found 40 minutes after the carjacking on a nearby street. Allen is thankful that her children and grandchildren were not injured, but she is planning to relocate.
