JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – After a string of recent crimes on Jayne Avenue, neighbors spoke out about what they believe should be done in Jackson.

May came to an end with two carjackings just six days apart on Jayne Avenue.

“There are things that we’re seeing not only in Jackson, but across this country that that used to be, you know, forbidden territory. And so, we have to speak out against that. And we have to combat in every way possible,” said Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba during a news conference on Monday.

A 14-year-old was arrested in connection to a carjacking on May 24. A carjacking on May 30 resulted in a three-year-old being hospitalized with a head injury after being hit by a vehicle.

“It’s a sad place to be, and I’m here to tell you, although I don’t say much about it, it’s too bad because it’s pitiful, pitiful down through here,” said Jereerine Montgomery, who lives in Jackson.

“The city plays a very important role in what’s happening because they don’t pave the streets, allowing grass to overgrow. So when you’ve got all that going on, they give people with other motive. They’ve got somewhere to hide,” said another neighbor.

Jackson police said both carjackings are under investigation. No suspects have been arrested in connection to the incident on May 30.
