JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi Democratic Party called for a boycott of the upcoming Mississippi State Fair after a rally for former President Donald Trump was held at the Mississippi Ag Museum.

The rally was held on Thursday, June 6 and was hosted by Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson (R-Miss.). This comes after Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York.

“It was a railroad job. They manufactured these so-called charges. They manufactured this law. They didn’t tell anybody what it was to the very end of the trial. And then they announced these convenient 34 convictions. And conveniently, they’re going to sentence him four days before the Republican National Convention,” Gipson said during Thursday’s rally.

“It is deeply concerning and frankly alarming to see our state leaders, including Attorney General Lynn Fitch and Governor Tate Reeves, supporting a convicted felon,” said Cheikh Taylor, Chair of the Mississippi Democratic Party. “Their actions reflect a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the principles of justice that our country was founded upon.”

The Mississippi Democratic Party called for the boycott of the 2024 Mississippi State Fair, which is an event associated with Gipson’s office.

The commissioner responded to the call for a boycott in a statement to WJTV 12 News. Gipson said, “The Mississippi Democrat Party’s statement and boycott of our State Fair is about as ridiculous as the charges brought against Donald Trump in New York City. I invite everyone to come enjoy the Mississippi State Fair October 3rd through 13th!”
