Canton mayor issues new youth curfew for city

CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – A new curfew has been issued for the City of Canton in an effort to curb crime in the city.

Mayor William Truly declared a curfew for those 17 and under. The curfew runs from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday.

The exceptions include minors going to and from work, returning from a school activity and cases where parents have declared their consent.

Minors who break curfew will be released to their parents on the first offense. The second offense is a $250 fine, and the third offense is a $500 fine.

Truly said all nightclubs will have to have proof of security and must close their doors by 1:00 a.m. Businesses and apartment complexes will also be required to install security cameras.

The mayor sad the new curfew policy will be enforced on a month-by-month basis.
