JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Mississippi doctor helped save the life of a teenager who was attacked by a shark in Florida.
Dr. Mohammad Ali, an interventional radiologist at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, was enjoying time at Seacrest Beach with his family and friends when 15-year-old Lulu Gribbin was attacked.
Ali and other doctors, who were present on the beach, quickly raced to the scene to save her life.
“Beautiful, sunny day and completely normal mild waves. And then me and my daughter had gone in because she wanted to play in on her boogie board. We were in about waist high water when kind of panic broke out. We saw a lot of people running and screaming. I immediately got my daughter. Once we got to the shoreline, I looked to the left, and I saw a lot of blood filled water. I knew immediately that someone had been attacked by a shark. I immediately went to the scene. I immediately it started compressing the femoral artery to try to preclude the vessel to prevent any additional blood loss was kind of the role I assigned myself,” explained Ali.
Gribbin survived her critical injuries. She was airlifted to a Pensacola hospital where her right leg was amputated at the middle of her thigh. Gribbin also lost one of her hands to the shark.
According to her mother, Gribbin’s condition is improving.
Another individual was harmed during the attack but did not sustain major injuries.
