CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Mississippi attorney has called for the release of all video evidence related to a 15-year-old student who was allegedly assaulted at a middle school.
Catanna Francois, an 8th grade student at Nichols Middle School, said she was physically and verbally assaulted on Thursday, April 4 by the school’s resource officer. Attorney Carlos Moore identified the officer as Jahyea Parker.
Francois claimed she was cursed at, choked, and dragged down the hall after attempting to use the restroom when given permission to do so by a teacher.
“The actions of Officer Parker and the subsequent failure of the City of Canton and the Canton Public School District to protect Ms. Francois are unconscionable,” said Moore. “The public has a right to know what transpired, and the immediate release of the video evidence is crucial for transparency and justice. We demand that this evidence be released without further delay.”
Officials with the school district said the resource officer had failed to adhere to proper procedures and protocols and was terminated.
Moore said they’re pursuing legal action based on violations of Francois’s constitutional rights.
