JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – This year marks the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer in Mississippi.

In 1964, the goal of Freedom Summer was to register as many Black voters in the state as possible.

While at the Two Mississippi Museums on Friday, Dave Dennis, Sr., spoke about the importance of education, voting and activism. He’s the co-founder of the Council of Federated Organizations and a coordinator of Freedom Summer.

In 1964, both Black and white Americans joined together in the fights against voter discrimination and voter intimidation.

Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman sought to help Black Mississippians register to vote during the Civil Rights Movement before they were brutally murdered by the Ku Klux Klan on June 21, 1964.

Dennis encouraged people to continue to fight for change.

“These are all your children. God, please march and do whatever you have to do. They’re closing down schools and taking your history out of schools,” said Dennis.

He will be in Indianola on Saturday to celebrate and speak about his life in the book “The Movement Made Us.”
