MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says one person has been shot and a suspect is in custody after a workplace shooting Wednesday morning in Mount Pleasant, Mississippi.
An employee at Pallet Source Inc. was shot several times by a coworker around 10 a.m., and airlifted to Regional One hospital in Memphis, the sheriff’s office said.
An argument allegedly started Tuesday afternoon between two coworkers and ended Wednesday morning.
“The shooting was the end result of this verbal altercation,” said Kenny Dickerson, Mashall County Sheriff.
One suspect is in custody. The sheriff said the suspect was found walking near the scene and was arrested with a gun in his backpack.
The sheriff says he believes the shooter shot through the backpack.
“It’s believed that person actually had the pistol inside the backpack and was firing through the backpack at the victim as the victims fled inside the plant,” Sheriff Dickerson said. “You know certainly I feel for the victim and family but with my many years in law enforcement it’s certainly not the first time this occurred and probably won’t be the last.”
The suspect’s name and age won’t be released until he’s charged. The victim was not identified.
WREG has reached out to the company for a statement, but they have declined to talk at this time.
