JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – On Monday, Governor Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) signed four law enforcement bills into law.
The bills included a measure that allows for the families of the deceased first responders to receive that responder’s salary for up to 60 days.
Another bill will increase the payout for individuals enrolled in the Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Death Benefits Trust Fund.
House Bill 691 revises the State Board on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training. This board trains and provides law enforcement certificates to every police officer and deputy in the state.
The board can now investigate instances of misconduct and revoke officer certificates.
“We think that that certainly has a real opportunity to provide not only more training opportunities, but also more accountability. You know, since I’ve been governor, the state has taken over the investigations of officer involved shootings. Again, we want to make sure that that all parties understand that that there is an unbiased source doing those investigations,” said Reeves. “The vast majority of officers appreciate the fact that there are not only more training opportunities but also standards and accountability for, for all of those officers, because that’s the best way for the system to work.”
The bill also mandates that the governor make six appointments to the board.
