MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Millington woman had no idea when her fiancé left their home early Friday morning to go fishing it would be the last time she saw him.

Gary Riley, 47, was killed, and another man nearly drowned when a boat capsized along the Mississippi River.

“Everything can change in a split second,” said Katie Porter.

Porter said Riley caught a large catfish on the Mississippi a week earlier and returned with a friend to try his luck again.

Porter doesn’t know exactly what happened but said the friend told her that her fiancée’s six-foot motorboat began taking on water, and Riley tried to pump out the water. She said Riley was a good swimmer but was not wearing a life jacket when he went into the water.

“He should have been wearing the life jacket. We had a conversation about the life jacket,” Porter said.

Porter said her fiancée leaves behind their two small children and two adult kids from a previous marriage.

She said Riley was an HVAC specialist and the sole provider for their household. She has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral and help her family while she figures out what to do next.

“This is a devastating time for everyone. No one likes to ask for help, but I’m to the point where I don’t know what else to do. He did everything for me,” Porter said.

Porter said Riley would have given anyone the shirt off his back, was a great father, and loved his children. She said she still hasn’t been able to break the bad news to their young kids.

“They haven’t asked where he is, which is really unusual,” said Porter. “I’m trying to determine the best way to tell them what happened.”

Porter is also hoping to get more information from police and rescue crews about what happened to her fiancee’s boat that day and how he drowned.
