Hattiesburg man arrested after standoff in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) – A Hattiesburg man was arrested after a standoff in Starkville.

Starkville police said they responded to reports of a man, armed with a knife and a handgun, fighting a woman outside an apartment complex. The incident happened at Brookville Garden apartments on Everglade Avenue before 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 8.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said Tyrez Wade, 33, of Hattiesburg, fled into a second-floor apartment and barricaded the door. They said a four-year-old child was already inside the apartment.

Police said the adjacent apartments were evacuated, and negotiations with Wade were attempted for more than two hours.

SWAT team members forced their way into the apartment and found Wade holding the child. Police said the the SWAT team were able to rescue the child and arrest Wade without significant injury. No firearms were found inside the apartment.

Wade has been charged with kidnapping, domestic violence simple assault, and disorderly conduct; failure to comply. He is being held at the Oktibbeha County Jail.
