SUMMIT, Miss. (WJTV) – The Town of Summit is mourning the loss of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

There has been an outpouring of support from the community after the shooting on Thursday, August 8. People have stopped by the Summit Police Department to pay tribute to Officer Troy Floyd.

McComb police responded within less than five minutes after they heard Floyd was shot on Thursday. The shooting happened during a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue in Summit.

Authorities said a manhunt for the suspect, 25-year-old Usher Leonard, began. McComb officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts were injured after making contact with Leonard. McComb Police Chief Juan Cloy said Leonard fired his weapon before he was shot and killed by law enforcement.

“And I’ve seen a lot of people get hit that were friends of mine. A lot of officers die. Didn’t think that that would happen down here, and we try to prepare as best as we can here with what I learned from Jackson. But you never can prepare for this. No matter where you work,” said Cloy.

Flags are now at half-staff across the state following the death of Floyd. Both Harvey and Roberts are now on administrative leave.

Floyd’s visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13 at Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church in Brookhaven. His funeral will follow the visitation. There will be a graveside service at Bethel Temple Cemetery.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
