SUMMIT, Miss. (WJTV) – Loved ones of Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd are mourning the loss of the fallen officer.
On Monday, family and friends took time to sign their names to a memorial flag draped across Floyd’s patrol car at the Summit Police Department.
Floyd was shot and killed on Thursday, August 8 during a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue in Summit. Two McComb police officers were injured during the incident.
Those who knew Floyd said his unwavering faith in God was the inspiration behind his work as a public servant, serving in law enforcement for more than 20 years in Lincoln and Pike counties.
Floyd was more than just a police officer for those closest to him. They said he was a loving man with a bright smile and became friends with everyone he met.
“If you ever met him, you would know. I mean, he talked about salvation, and he wanted everybody to have salvation and be in Heaven with him. He never had a conversation that did not involve the Lord. He was just truly a God-fearing man,” said Heather Deer, Floyd’s cousin.
Floyd’s visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13 at Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church in Brookhaven. His funeral will follow the visitation. There will be a graveside service at Bethel Temple Cemetery.
Governor Tate Reeves declared August 13 as a day of mourning due to the loss of Floyd. He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.
