JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The illegal dumping of trash at an abandoned, burned-down home is a growing eyesore in a West Jackson community.
There is overgrown grass, trash and debris on the corner of Highwood Drive. Property owners in the neighborhood said the home is starting to collapse in on itself.
“I’ve been noticing those things, and it’s a real hot mess. And the person who bought the home or supposed to be over it should have been doing something about it. But it’s sad because it looks bad in our community,” said Lakeithia Friar, a resident.
The eyesore is turning into a hazard. The house has been sitting in a dilapidated condition for years.
“No grass being cut. It’s an eyesore. It’s an awful thing for children to get off the bus and have to walk by. These kids shouldn’t have to walk by a neighborhood looking like this. It’s a health hazard, and it’s awful,” said Carol Anthony, a resident.
Residents said either the city or the property owners need to demolish what’s left of the home.
Highwood Drive is located in Jackson’s Ward 2. Councilwoman Angelique Lee, Ward 2, said the city is working to address issues in the area.
