JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A popular Jackson event venue is in need of a makeover, and the city is expected to dish out big bucks for the cleanup.
Repairs to Thalia Mara Hall come with a hefty price. Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said it will cost between $4 to $5 million to handle the repairs. This comes after an air conditioning malfunction at the facility caused early microbial growth.
Thalia Mara Hall is an older building that experiences challenges from time to time. To rent the venue, a fee of $1,200 has to be paid, which Lumumba said is extremely cheap compared to other facilities around the county. His administration is looking to increase the costs.
“And $4 or $5 million does not stretch as far as you may think that it does. Air conditioning units cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have an issue with the orchestra pit that has to be secured. There’s an assessment for the fire curtain to ensure that it still has a useful life that will ultimately need to be replaced. And the rigging system is something that we’re evaluating, too, as to whether it needs to be repaired. It’s older,” he said.
The city is working with the Jackson Convention Complex on the rescheduling of events that were originally set for Thalia Mara Hall.
