BATESVILLE, Miss. — A Panola County man pleads guilty to beating three children last year in Batesville.
Dalton Melton entered a guilty plea in a 2023 case where he’d been charged with severely beating three children, a 14-year-old, a six-year-old and a three-year-old, in his Pope, Mississippi mobile home.
The plea agreement was reached by his attorney and the District Attorney and ensures Melton won’t stand trial. Melton will serve 20 years in prison plus 10 years in post-release supervision.
However, there are some conditions involved.
A judge may decide to accept or reject this plea agreement when it comes time for sentencing, but for now, the mother of the children involved said 20 years isn’t enough.
“Twenty years – my four-year-old won’t be but 14 with the percent rate of what he’s going to do in jail,” Robin Barlow-Melton said.
The mother was not at Panola County Circuit Monday when Melton entered a guilty plea.
“I mean, he knew he was guilty anyway,” Robin Barlow-Melton said. “So, why not go ahead and plea to what you did.”
She said two of her children are recovering but the six-year-old is still traumatized.
“He suffers a lot more with the anger and he wants to fight all the time,” Robin Barlow-Melton said. “One minute he’s fine, the next minute he’s scared to even go take a shower. He’s scared Dalton’s going to be in the next room and now he has a fear of him getting out.”
She told WREG she knows her children will never forget what happened to them and she doesn’t want Dalton Melton to forget the pain he inflicted.
“Personally, I hope they give his a– life or if he has to serve the 20 years, I really wish they would plaster pictures of my kids and record those videos of my kids screaming, begging him to stop and play they play it over and over and over again in his cell,” Robin Barlow-Melton said.
According to District Attorney Jay Hale, Melton is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday.
