JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police and firefighters asked for more funds from the city on Wednesday.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade asked for $1.1 million to help the Jackson Police Department (JPD) move forward. He said the department needs additional license plate readers, blue light camera surveillance and a salary increase for officers.
Even though JPD has gained momentum, Wade said they’re still facing manpower and equipment fatigue challenges.
Officials with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) said they need funds for updating fire equipment and increase salaries.
As of August 2024, firefighters receive a $42,000 salary, but officials said that’s not enough. They’re requesting that the rate and salary increase align with JPD.
ReSean Thomas, the Jackson Firefighter Union President, said they presented the contract idea to the mayor years ago.
“A contract has already been placed on the mayor’s office over seven years ago. He has not signed it, and we don’t know why. We’re ready to negotiate, but somebody is kicking the can down the road. That’s the truth,” Thomas said.
He said the JFD salaries must be competitive to attract and retain people.
