McComb police seize illegal guns nearly every shift

PIKE COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – McComb police said they’re having to take guns off the street nearly every shift.

During a training session, officers showed the destruction guns, like AR-15s, can cause. Shots were fired into a heavy wooden door, three-ply 4x4s, iron and a car. While the iron was only dented, the bullets fired through the door, wood and the vehicle.

Police said the power behind assault rifles can easily shoot through a home, which could cause injury or death to those inside.

“Most of our homes here in McComb are made of wood. There are very few that are made of brick. So, just shooting at it is going to go through because it’s just one ply. And you guys saw that it went directly through the three-ply. So, when you manufacture these homes, they don’t think about that. So, it is easy to go through anything,” said Lt. Kayla Moore, with the McComb Police Department.

“A lot of over-penetration with a lot of the rounds that are being bought in that we recover on the street. A lot of them are target rounds or full metal jacket rounds, which have the tendency just to keep going through whatever they hit. They tumble and go straight through whatever target,” said Cpl. Tyler Harvey, with the McComb Police Department.

Police said many criminals are getting guns by stealing them. Officers urge gun owners to keep firearms locked in a safe and to never leave guns inside a vehicle.
