PEARL, Miss. (WJTV) – Pearl police arrested a woman for falsely reporting an armed carjacking in the city, as well as a man in connection to the case.

According to investigators, Pearl police received a call from Jackson police on May 27 stating they responded to a home in their city in reference to a woman claiming she was carjacked in the Save-A-Lot parking lot in Pearl.

Police said the woman, 41-year-old Chaquinta Lynell Russell, of Byram, told investigators that a man made her drive to an address in Jackson, forced her out of the vehicle and stole the vehicle.

Russell was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for evaluation for minor injuries.

According to investigators, Russell said she worked at the Dairy Queen in Pearl, and she had bank deposits in the vehicle. Throughout the investigation, Pearl police said the night before the incident, an unknown person came into the Dairy Queen and stole the night deposits from the business. They said Russell did not report the incident to law enforcement or the business.

On June 8, Madison police stopped the carjacked vehicle in the city limits of Madison. Police said both Russell and 38-year-old Kenbrosky Santrell Smith, of Jackson, were inside the vehicle. They were detained and transported to Pearl for questioning.

Police said both Russell and Smith denied knowledge of the crime, and Smith refused to speak with detectives.

Smith was charged with accessory after the fact, and Russell was charged with false report of a crime to law enforcement and embezzlement. Police said other charges are pending against Russell.
